well amd has blundered big time , and so to say has ati..amd has bought ati ..in the hopes of exclusevity for on die gpu's and intergrated gfx solutions...of course this means AMD can kiss goodbye to SLI and NFORCE ...two of its main selling points, and ATI who use a proprietary Intel bus master will have to reinvent the wheel for its gpu line up.

in one respect i cant say i blame them..with Core2 effectively embarrasing the entire AMD chip lineup ...some sort of corporate good news was needed..but ati was the wrong choice already nvidia can run the table against ati as far gpu line up goes , with a top to bottom solution nvidia has marginalized ati over the last year, and now as almost every single tech site and benchmarking suite can attest that the new "CONROE" cpu is definately a next gen product, @65nm with thermal cap at 65 watts and introductory speeds at 2.66ghz , intel has blown away any talk of hot chips ,performace ,and price factors.

as we enter the home stretch for windows vista there can be no more arguments like amd vs intel ...amd has been owned and ati has handed nvidia the market.

they had better get there heads together and try to come up with some sort of stellar product otherwise this merger looks just plain dumb!..........what was amd thinking...they should have bought out nvidia and solidified the whole SLI platform...perhaps they are banking on xbox 360 sales to bolster there back end?..we wont know right away time will tell .

stuff like this sucks it just serves up more confusion for the customer and removes choice ...AMD OR INTEL ...nvidia or ati ...keeping it separate but interoprable is my idea of better choice for the pc buyer

now will amd owners be forced to deal with ati grfx?.....and intel owners forced to own nvidia?...this kind of thing has the potential to go bad ..and who looses out?  we the customers , already hard choices are now confused beyond sight.

lets just hope amd has enough sense to keep ati at arms length and intel the same with nvidia , at least this will keep the choices in our hands a bit longer.

They're probably looking to expand more into the non-pc tech market.  AMD vs. Intel...depends when you're talking, give it time, AMD will come up with something, Intel will counter it, back to AMD etc.  It's really become a preference thing.  Same with the GPU's.  I'm not so sure the buyout is a good idea either.  As AMD, now after this buyout, would you rather build an nVidia platform or an ATI platform.  You build the ATI platform, profit from it, and profit from the ATI card to go with it.

Oh, Instinct. If you would just sit back and watch the fireworks, you'd enjoy a much more relaxed show. Instead, you'd rather debate the virtues of one brand of black powder over the other. In the end, they're still both just black powder...

voodoo ..its about choice*..and the ability as a customer building your own machine to choose the parts that you wish to choose...not having to contend with compatibilty issues,

if i am an Amd fan and i want to go out and put something together i shouldnt be forced to own an ati grfx solution...and i shouldnt be procluded from an nvidia sli platform either

or as an intel fan ..now i cant have top caliber ati cards because of conflicts with Amd corp.

these sort of moves only remove choice or even hinder the customer...rarely do these sort of moves benefit us the joe user, who do you think really benefits from this ati or Amd?..

take for example the old techTV channel with shows like *the screensavers* and *call for help*..great great stuff..then along comes G4 network and comcast and merge the channels

eventually cancelling techTV and homogonizing G4 to become some sort of mtv for the gamers...rarely do G4 show pc games or anything tech...its all just digital cameras and xbox.

this is the sort of thing this will produce Amd will absorb the talent from ati ..eventually ati will die ... i wont shed tears for ati, but it sad that a true and worthy competitor will fade away ..without any real

competition what will make nvidia put quality into there future line up?...invariably this kind of thing just plain sucks as far as we are concearned...Amd stockholders will rejoice and smoke a cigar .

LOL, time to go on local cable and start your own tech show fellas.  Just think, as soon as people start to recognize your talent, someone will throw money at you and destroy the product.  Happens all the time.

    *  AMD plans on acquiring ATI for a total of $5.4 billion dollars in a mixture of cash and stock.  AMD will use $4.2 billion in cash ($1.7 billion currently on hand, and another $2.5 billion borrowed) and 57 million of its shares to pay for the deal.
    * The deal will close in the next 100 - 120 days, finalizing it near the end of 2006.
    * AMD isn't disclosing under what conditions it would walk away from the deal.
    * According to AMD's Hector Ruiz, AMD is partnering with ATI to develop "integrated silicon where it makes sense".
    * AMD has no intention of blocking or prohibiting the sale of ATI products to anyone, but neither AMD nor ATI is counting on things like ATI Intel chipset sales continuing going forward.
    * Current ATI roadmaps over the next 6 months will remain unchanged.
    * ATI's manufacturing arrangement (mainly ATI being a fabless manufacturer) will not change for the next 1 - 2 years.  The current production models will remain as-is.
    * AMD doesn't believe that NVIDIA will alter its relationship with AMD; NVIDIA believes the same.
    * Intel has not revoked ATI's bus license and has not made any public changes to its cross-licensing agreements currently in place with AMD and ATI.

That states it all right there. Will not effect anything for next 1-2 years

Wow  Call for Help, The screen savors.  Man I do miss those shows!

Anyhow, guys this is all about markability.  NVIDIA has the shores mined and ATI cannot get the access to what Intels plans are.  Geez guys, it is so obvious.  Nvidia is working on cards way in to the future for Intel. ATI does not have that kind of access with Intel.  But, ATI will have to find a whole other route in their business plans.  I actually saw this comming.  Look at the incompatibility issues with so many ATI cards and popular games.  Those games are catered to Nvidia.  Not that ATI can't be comptable, just that they have to adapt their structured cards to those games where Nvidia already has the working plans from Intel.
Why all this?  People, the internet will have a major change here in the next few years.  Microsft who already owns the internet market along with the new Vista will be the start of an entire new internet erra.  Graphics is one that will be a major change as computers turn into entire entertainment systems.  Software and hardware company's are standing in line at Intel to get there products adapted to Intel.  ATI is one of those standing in line.  Nvidia has by passed that line 3 years ago and are working very closley with Intel and game software companies.
