Instinct, unplug that modem for 5 minutes and plug it back in, there may be a firmware update for it.  It is a good idea to do this once in a while to automatically update the fimware.  Though the construction may be the issue, I really doubt it.
As a note, Motorola SB 42xx have been recalled about 3 years ago, if you have this modem, get your ISP to replace it.

no TK the box is HD from pioneer, i have an all in one package but they dont give out a pioneer modem, it is RCA, they will let you use any modem you buy, however if you are a subscriber to digital phone wich i am u need to use the modem they give out the afformentioned RCA!.

my signal strength is all over the place right now 5 blocks in either direction have been torn up sewers electrical and possibly cable might be seriously impeeded here.
this all started with a nursing home that multiplied into new housing and storm sewer reclamation , highway widening.

i have tried the reboot modem thing umpteen times now ive called tech support too mant times to count .

progress sucks!

I beleive all modems receive firmware updates from DOCSIS regardless of make or model.  try accessing this IP http://192.168.100.1/config.html Which usually is standard configuration IP to access your  modem.

Motorola 4200's only had an issue in early versions with some 10t stuff.  I would doubt any of them are left out there by now.  I know people with later revision SB4200's that are getting 15/2 with Cablevisions upgraded service here on L.I. with no problems.

If the signal strength is all over the place, t's either in the outside lines or inside the house.   Maybe a bad splitter?   Hows your cable TV picture Instinct?

Not all modems allow you to access the internal readings.  The old Terrajet I had was like that.  The Motorola I have now, does allow access to the stat screen.  Can't speak for RCA, never had one.  Instinct, you maybe able to get some info from RCA website.  Firmware updates are pushed by the provider as needed.  When Cablevision went from 10/1 to the expanded 15/2 service, I needed to reboot the modem to get the firmware upgrade.  Other than that, the firmware hadn't changed in over a year.

I'd keep bustin the cable providers berls on this one Instinct.  Your paying for a service, demand you get what you are paying for.  I went through a run of this with Cablevision two years ago.  I would loss connection to the net or get real slow.  They kept telling me everything was fine.  I finally had them send a tech everytime I had a problem.   They quickly decided that trying a new modem would be worthwhile.  Sure enough, that's what it was.  The modem hadn't failed, but it was not working properly.  The other thing to check would be a router if you have one.  I've had one of those give me problems as well.

RGR KAT! i have already replaced the modem , picture signal strength is superb full 720p or 1080i, replacement modem is likewise slow.

Q: what are the advantages to replacing the NIC , i mean disabling the mobo ethernet and use a standalone nic in the pci slots?
Q: will pci nic perform like the mobo?.. or better then the mobo?

In my experience there is no difference in speed between the onboard NIC and a PCI NIC.  That's if both are working correctly.  This recent build had an onboard NIC for which I did not have drivers.  I installed my old PCI NIC so that I could DL the drivers I needed for this MoBo.  Ran a speed test while I had it in there.  It came up with the same speeds I got with the internal NIC once I got that up and running.   To the best of my knowledge the onboard NIC is using the PCI bus, it's just hard wired to it.

Now it is possible that the internal NIC is failing and that's causing an issue.  It could also be a lack of bandwidth on the PCI bus, given Intels less than stunning memory controller and the need to dedicate huge amounts of bandwidth to memory use, to get thier procesors to preform at close to an AMD level.    ;D ;D ;D

If the signal is good to the TV and the modem is on a split from the TV, than the signal lose is coming after that split.  It could be a bad splitter, bad cable, heck, even just a loose connection at the modem or splitter.   Just some more things to check.  If the TV's good, it's not a problem from outside.

Instinct do you use a router at all?  If so what brand and model?

neg Kat no router at this time , however i do own one and from time to i will network the pc's that are in the house for windows updates and ect, if im not mistaken it is a linksis befsr41 and it has had a firmware done on it last summer, but it isnt in use here now.

when you say lack of bandwidth on the pci bus..am i able to do some bios setting to pump up the pci bridge? and when you say bandwith are you refering to memory allocation to the bus? and if so can i step that up ?..i have gigs galore to waste.

Nothing you can do about the memory bandwidth.  That was just a little AMD vs Intel dig.  The reason Intel has gone to DDR2 is thier memory controller is less efficient than the AMD on chip controller.   To overcome this they use more bandwidth to move memory gunctions around.  Nothing you can do about it, and it really has nothing serious to do with this discussion.

Again just a bit of a jab.  Thought the Bart Simpson mooning gif would let you know I was joking.  sorry.
