Hey All,

I am looking at the possibility of buying a house in the country. Does anyone know what kind of High Speed options there are if any and who offers them, so I can check them out on the web?

Thanks for all help

The people in our house had a satellite system, duno what it was.  They built a new subdivison down the road and that brought cable out here.

I googled "satellite internet" and go t some good hits.

I am not too sure Satellite will be good for gaming.  There is quite a delay ( latency).  It is great for fast internet but no good for the delay it takes.  It might be much better today but when I looked into this a few years back, it wasn't a good choice to do FPS gaming where the action is live.

for dsl you have to be within a certain distance from the station. isdn may be available but i think its pricey and it's slow., like 192k or something.
I think you can get fractrional t1 in any speed you want, also known as frame relay-also pricey. but it may have come down in price. .
If there is a town nearby you might check for an isp there, see what they have. they could have a decent wireless.
if theres nothing i guess you could get a fractional t1, set up a wireless and sell it to locals, that would get you free internet.
depends on what you mean by "in the country"

When i was on Dial up for a few years i did the Research
on Satellite for Gaming and it worked out to be the same
as Dial up Speeds the time it took to get from me to the
Satelite = dial up speeds for gaming and the cost back then was.. Well out of this World..hehee
Like TK said.. for surfing it would be fine. however the  latency for gaming would be the same as Dial up.

purchase 10 miles of coax cable , run it all the way into town and connect up to the local cable servc...J/k

wireless may be the way to go , however check with the provider maybee they will allow you to use your own
high gain antenna, you can buy a decent boom antenna for a reasonable price ,get it up on a mast (powered) and run the coax . you may be able to sustain at least 768k and 300k up , thats about what it takes for fps shooters, with focus on the upload.

I have a 800k connection with 400k up. At first it was great. My pings are ok. And there is 0 latency if the
service provider is running on at least a 800mhz line. Then there is the line of sight. If you do go wireless, you will have to build a poll or buy one. I would get up at least 50-75ft. I ping out ts at 54ms
and get a nice ping doing ping speed tests on our websites speedtest.net. You will have to deal with your connection going up and down at all times.

ALL and all if you can get cable dsl then get it. Sat sucks. But wireless really isn't that bad if you can get
a decent provider that has the right stuff to get it to  you.

I dunno much about all this. But if you put a pole up consider lighting. ground it well and pay for a good protector.  I speak from experience.
