my control panel/my games/add non-dteam game/
you then find the .exe file of your game.
you have to get into game through your control panel (to show you in that game on Steam) .. the problem is that messed up arma for me..other games may not be so bad. I see a lot of members in "Non-Steam games (like JO)

ah cool... didn't realize you had to launch it through steam... figured it would be like xfire where it just monitors the exe you set to find out if its running... guess steam isn't that advanced yet.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

I can't find the thread, but you can't launch a punkbuster game through steam. PB sees the steam to graphics interface as a cheat and will kick you off the server. PB doesn't care about the problem, and is putting it on Steam to figure the problem out. I've added all my games to Steam, but I never launch from it.

"PB sees the steam to graphics interface as a cheat and will kick you off the server."
Incorrect !
. when a game is launched via steam , the pathway is changed from C:\ xxx to C:\steamapps\xxx thereby confusing the streaming online verification, although i have never had this happen to me ,and i have played dozens of PB enabled games !!, proof positive is the new QUAKE Wars game, this streams through PB servers and runs just fine from steam, you will see several meow members playing non steam games with PB servers.
"figured it would be like xfire where it just monitors the exe you set to find out if its running... guess steam isn't that advanced yet."
Incorrect !
, steam is light years beyond xfire , in fact steam is a fully mature digital delivery / content distro app, as well as a full featured clan enabled client, xfire by contrast is an intrusive application that plants several keystroke elements into your system registry unbeknown to you, xfire like wise allocates system resources beyond that it needs to function, xfire is a prime example of aged thinking , Steam and Live for windows , are the 2 most modern and lightweight game clients you will ever find.
any game can be launched from steam , you must use the add/ games tab, select the exe. and thats all, bear in mind that STEAM updates weekly ,unlike PB or various Video drivers, things you must keep considered ,
maintain stable drivers
= if you are prone to adopting the latest drivers , even if your PC is running fine , you will encounter overlay problems, read the release notes prior to any driver install.
** in your vid card driver panel be very sure that """ vmr overlay is enabled + open gl settings are correct***
refer to the steam support page for the correct settings.
PUNKBUSTER,
relies on direct X , make sure you have the latest DX updates and .Net framework updated via Windows updates, perform the Start\run\dxdiag diagnostic on your machine , then scan for corrupt or missing Dx files or settings.
Lastly go into your Firewall settings make sure you ADD or Allow all of your game exe and especially Steam , put them in under the allow tab -EVEN If you dont use the Firewall.
During a multiplayer game, you may experience issues such as being disconnected from game servers for the following reasons:
* Punkbuster is out of date
* Punkbuster is not enabled. Please enable Punkbuster to join this server
If you suspect that Punkbuster is not up to date, please visit Evenbalance for an update. Certain multiplayer servers may not require the most recent version of PunkBuster. This is why the game may have worked for a certain period of time until problems began to arise.
To enable Punkbuster, please launch the game you are attempting to play and look for the option in the game's multiplayer settings. To ensure that PunkBuster is enabled, please check the box where it says "enable".
if you need help editing your driver table for either nvidia or Ati get with me i will walk you through it, this reminds me it might be time to make sure Peeps are using the right drivers and settings , we may need to schedule some time for workshop on this.

I need to interject on this a little bit. All good information! but the last PB update left Steam users holding the bag. This could be noticed by all the PB Kicks over the last few days. PB was not recognizing some overlay fetures like Xfire and Steam.
At current, Steam is not actually updated with the new PB update. COD4 will not run with the Steam interface running (What you use in game as an overlay Sft-Tab) This must be shut down to avoid PB kicks. So you will not be able to run the Steam app in game. There will be an update soon from Steam and PB for this. Appears Steam and PB are working well with each other as Steam is a major funder of PB.
Americas Army running PB will not work with the Steam App running. As with the above, you DO NOT need to exit Steam. You WILL NEED to go in and uncheck the Steam overlay while in game feature. This allows you to still launch the game from Steam but will not allow you to use the in game Steam app. There will be updates on this in the near future.
