After loading the XP CD, you want to go in to repair settings.  That will take you to a command window much like DOS.  They say that it isn't DOS I say my ass.  Anyhow, what is it you need?  Blue screen of death?  Netloader not found?
Typing 'HELP' will (should bring you a list of commands)
The first thing I do with any start up issues is do a FIXBOOT.  Type fixboot and enter is one way, another is to actually copy a fresh copy from the Windows CD itself.  I actually think that you type FIXBOOT that is what it is doing so no need to copy a fresh one IMO.

Out of my three attempts only one was successful in installing windows files over the existing with out loosing personal data other than settings.  SO tread careful.
Here is a suggestion.  If you have files you must get to, create a new partition with enough space as to allow Windows to function and store files temporarily. Making sure you HAVE enough space as to not conflict with the files you have on board now.  This will be on drive D most likely, it will bump any other CD driver letters by one and also any other HD's you have.
Install a new Windows in that new partitian and select that on your next log in.  Of course it will take 20 to 30 minutes it is a new installation.
Once you have done that and booted into your new version, you will be able to see all your files on the old partition.  This is if there is no issues with the HD.
Warning, use caution when doing this.  As there is no guarantee.   I have been very successful with this.  The other way is to get a new HD, one that is fast and nice, 8MB cache and so on.  Install a new Windows, connect the old HD and use it as a second drive.  Migrate to that drive and you will see all your old files.

Is that a typO?  it should be ipconfig <-- as one word.  It should read ipconfig /all <-- notice the space after ipconfig

Instinct, why use Windows CD to repair for this?

well tk its not my laptop, its a friends and he has no recovery cd set or rebuild cd set, the laptop is circa 2001, so i used a copy of winxp to try to lift the missing components, somehow large chunks of windows sytem files are either missing or badly corrupted, the pc has constant system warnings and error messeges, i already removed 200+ spyware files and trojans, deleted the sys restore ,and installed a new antivirus, but i cannot connect it to the web to do windows updating, you see this person was a hardcore aol dial upper and has just about every single 3rd party toolbar and search app in there, sad situation really, how come on all those aol commercials they never say "no wonder its number 1 - you can never get rid of us" lol.
