i'm a linux nut.  i've been using linux for about 11 years now.  i've got a debian test server in my house for testing web apps that's been running non-stop for 4 years and has never been rebooted only when the power goes out - GO DEBIAN!

on my main box i've got 5 OS's bootable and stable: debian, ubuntu, gentoo, fedora 8, and XP..
i'm working on a home automation system in my free time written in python for my house. - gonna be sick.

sadly, i have a HTPC down stairs in our bedroom running xp and meedios, which i have to say is stable as heck.

my wife a has a linux dumb terminal(connects to my debian sever upstairs) in the kitchen hooked to a dell 17" LCD and wireless keyboard and mouse so she can surf the web, get recipies, and etc...

both mine and my wife's latops run ubuntu also, but she loves it
i'd have to recommend ubuntu to any linux first-timer, and then move to  straight debian.

-Nifty

yup.. i'm a nerd.

heck yeah. i've used debian for a long time and it works very well as a server, only downtime like you said is power failures or hardware changes. sadly, my debian box right now has a bad power supply and i'm waiting for the funds to get a decent one back in it. the only problem i found hosting my sites off there was it sucked alot of my normal bandwidth, but now that its down, i paid for 1 yr hosting and just have some random testing files up there now. debian is hands down the best choice, and ubuntu, being debian based, is a great system as well, and its nice to see the regular updates from ubuntu, rather than the "you can get a debian upgrade every 3 years" lol but hey, thats what made debian the most stable and reliable. python i know nothing about, nor have i really looked into it at all, but i do hear its a very powerful language... i just deal mostly in web programming (php, javascript, etc). started working with perl, but after finding php2, i've been a big fan of php.

hey felix, get you a ubuntu or any other linux distro live cd.  you can boot of the cd and use the os until you reboot.  yep i'm a hardcore geek.  i check that site out you sent me, and it's pretty sweet.

raidien, i too am somewhat of a programmer, but my bread and butter is web and graphic design.  i was a network admin for about 6 years also.    i delve into php, javascript, python, some ruby, ajax, asp.net, basic cold fusion, etc.  i love to program in flash for making web apps for video and audio players with dynamic playlists connected to mysql or sql through xml.

i guess i'll post man system specs like some of the others here:

Asus Crosshair
4gb OCZ DDR2800
X2 6400
2 evga 8800gts
gigabyte centurion case
old audigy2(like a rock for 5.1)
1 sata 200gb seagate(main drive)
1 sata 850gb hitachi (storage and linux partitions)
2 Samsung 24" LCD ws
logitech z5400
logitech g15 keyboard
razer mouse

and there ya go..

I've desperately wanted to get into it for a few years now, but I haven't had a platform to load it on. I've got ubuntu on a disk that I messed around with booting from the CD, but trying to sun it in a virtual box setup kind of sucked. Now that I built a new Pc I'll get another HD when I can afford it and run a dual boot system.
