for some reason,my video card's fan speed is set to 25%.and with smooth's help, i learned too adjust this speed. however, as soon as i jump into cod4,it reverts back too 25% and not 75% where i changed it. and thus it runs too hot. around 160F.
any1 have any idea's on why? im running an nvidia 7950 gt slie.i think its a 256mb card.

Could this be a profile settings for your graphics card? I know I can create several profiles which include fan speeds and core clocking. You can set this individually for each game.

I only say that because the way you say it reverts back to a previous setting, like a default profile, is what I was thinking.

as far as the profiles go, I go to Nvidia Control Panel > 3D Settings and your profiles are in there... you can search for a cod4 profile and see if its configured, if the profile option is even configured to use individual profiles... I'm wondering if vsync might be causing your problems... in the profile, you can set it to on/off/app-controlled...

Man this is nuts.. setting profiles and stuff the morons that make the card should just have a thermistor in the card and the fan speed increases or decreases based on the temp the chip it is putting out. done deal.

found it raid, forced Vsync on. and it seems to be running kooler. around 145F. but it still wont allow the fan speed to stay where i set it. it was set to use the 3D app setting. tried to turn it off, and no effect. "on" runs kooler tho. we'll see how the game play is with it on.

Check out this guide Wild. It will help you set up some profiles for temperature ranges. That may stop it from throttling down when you run games. I will give this a try tomorrow and see how it works.

Yeah it works pretty good, I tracked the fan speed throttling up and down at the temps I set. Some things he didn't cover in that article, or at least the part I read: Set Rivatuner to run at Windows startup and to close to the tray to keep these settings in effect. Also, in our particular case it would be worth setting a scheduler event for Windows startup to set the speed at something other than the stuck value. I set values for 60/80/100% fan speeds with a low minimum temp on 60 and a high maximum temp on 100. I noticed it doesn't start loading profiles until you cross a temperature threshold. For example, mine won't run at 60% when Windows starts even though the temp is within the min and max temps I set as the parameters for loading that profile. It will only start loading profiles when I cross the maximum temp for 60% and the minimum for 80%. This seems to be a bug in the program and for this reason I'd recommend setting a scheduler event to load your lowest speed profile on windows startup. That should kick-start the program and get it to start loading profiles on its own. Finally, don't take the temp values he used as standard. Every card is different and you may want different numbers.
