im trying to get headphones working , they dont seem to want to work on my laptop. i plug them in and i still hear my laptop speakers and no sound coming through headphones.  this is windows vista. is there a setting somwere?

Right click on volume icon in the tray and select Playback Devices.  See what is set as your default device (green check mark).  You may need to switch it.
