Best advice is to wait for the RC before doing any major upgrades IMO. Performance in the beta is lousy for most people.

my old card was a GeForce 7600... minimum specs are 7800...
onboard is ATI HD4200 (IGP) ... and I can hardly play BF2 at 1024x768 - Low Settings, let alone BC2...
anyhow, I've been wanting to upgrade for a while, and I think the HD 5770 should last for several years... board I got I can eventually upgrade to AM3 Phenom Quad-Core, but that is probably a few years down the road...

They've got the edge now, but give nvidia a few more months and their new cards will be out. Same as always, back and forth.

I don't care if Intel/GeForce is the greatest... I don't care to give them my money... I have a GeForce 7600 and have had it for years... had many issues, and just don't care much for it... Moving to Gigabyte from MSI... big difference, IMO, I really love this board (so far)... I do a lot of homework before buying stuff though.... Upgrade literally piece by piece... the stuff I phase out into my Linux box (where the 7600 is now, replacing my old Leadtek WinFast A400)... had that card for probably 3-4 years before I got my 7600, which has been in use for about 3... never really saw much of a performance increase, and couldn't even play a game as old as BF2 on anything over medium, and it still had some jitters there...
Never owned an ATI card, but wanted to give it a shot, specially since AMD has the reigns on them now... And I don't like mixing onboard nVidia chipsets with ATI cards (and vice versa), so I picked up an AMD chipset with onboard ATI (temporarily) until I can upgrade to ATI card... AMD fanboy, maybe, but to me Intel is like Apple, and no matter how "cool" the product, I will stick with what I've had the most like and reliability with, which is AMD.

I don't really stick to the brands either as far as cpu's and chipsets. Whoever has the best price/performance at the time I'm looking to upgrade gets my money.

Beta update released, make sure to run the updater in your folder.
Quote
This update is about performance and stability again. We are not doing any changes to the game's datafiles.
Reduced input "lag"
On machines where the CPU would out-run the GPU, sometimes the GPU would queue up several frames' worth of rendering commands.
This could lead to the game having a high framerate, but input still feeling very sluggish.
Now there's a limiter on how many frames the CPU is allowed to be "ahead" of the GPU.
Control this setting via Settings.ini. Default setting: RenderAheadLimit=2
Performance optimizations with biggest improvements on dual-core machines
Fixed black "masks"
The soot on buildings with holes in them had a bugged renderpath. We switched that over to a more well-tested renderpath.
Improved hit-detection
We've gone through the hit detection logic, and client+server will now give more consistent results.
Fix for some "rubberbanding" issues
C4 should stay attached to vehicles and not rubberband around
Reduced spikes/dips in framerate
Various fixes for alt+tab related CTD on Dx9
More fixes for random CTD on Dx9
Fix for crash when you're in a vehicle that gets destroyed
There was a race condition in the code;
System 1 thought "oh hey, you're leaving vehicle X"
System 2 thought "the vehicle got destroyed, let's remove it"
If system 2 ran before system 1, chaos would ensue.
This was actually fixed in the retail version since a month, but it was only when we got detailed crash reports from the community that we understood *why* the Beta was crashing.
Likely bugs in this build
I wouldn't be surprised if it (still) has trouble remembering your settings between rounds. It would be nice to have that fixed too, but it's better to get a patch out now, and look at the settings issues afterward.

So I wanted to test it with my onboard, but having some issues connecting...
getting "Connection to the game server has been lost"... when trying to update port forwarding, getting "connection to EA has been lost", or something similar... what a nice 33 page topic going on at ea's forums...
http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/374945.page
hopefully this is fixed by the time i get the new video card installed... anyone else have connection problems, and possible fixes?
