Hello all,
Most have you may have noticed the add OpenDNS on the side bar and for you that haven’t noticed I would like to take a moment to enlighten you on why it is there.
Most browsers on PC’s such as Mozilla, IExx, Opera…use system default or MSN default settings.  What does this mean?  It means your net surfing and searching is being catered to…. Well who ever your “default” name server is.  This can be one your ISP sets for you (most likely) or what the actual browsers are set too.

Why use OpenDNS?  Well, any reputable and even the “default” is probably reputable but does it protect you?  Probably not like it should.  Please read what OpenDNS can provide for you.  For instance, more accurate searches, typo corrections and forget the url, just type the site! (most cases).  OpenDNS also protects you against phishing and intrusions that the defaults do not do.
I have this set up on my home network and it works like it should.  Plus it is faster in respects when you figure in all the machines out there set to the same default name servers.  I am able to view logs, eliminate bad urls (automatically) and this is a great tool for family’s that need help protecting where the kids are going when the internet is concerned.
Free is always good but a free service that actually does what it is meant = priceless.

Right on, sorry I did not get back at you soon enough. Glad you got it configured. If it s simple explanation, please let us know.  I know the configuration is a bit spooky at first but when you see what it is telling you it isn't so bad.

Hello all, a little FYI - Please look this up as well so you have all the facts.
Most routers have an option to point at what one could call a "gleaner" which may be a poor choice of words to describe it's (DNS) function. What OpenDNS and others like this perform is - a safe home network path to a legit name server that actually assist you as well as protect you (It gleans the known baddys out and helps protect your machine).  It is free and much faster way to surf the net and you do not have to register to use it. Registering gives you more tools for your home network such as filtering, logging and protection against the unwanted phishing and hijacking that a machine picks up from websites (mostly third party addons not originally from the site you are visiting) but you get that with out registering just by pointing your router to the OpenDNS nameservers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 <-- there is no filter just for pointing your router to the name server other than known sites that are a manace by hijacking or known virus/Trojan threats.

I have found this to be a faster way to surf than using my ISP default nameservers. Remember, if you are logged in and have made changes to the filter, you may not get to sites that you were normally able to before. Of course this can be left open or adjusted to how you like. Pretty nice feature really.

Oh   , BTW, You will know you are protected by looking at the OpenDNS block.  It will tell you that your are using the OpenDNS nameservers.
