If any program asks you to pay to remove a virus, chances are it's a virus itself or redirects to a virus.  From briefly googling, most places I am seeing say it installs along with downloaded games or apps and is in the undesired software category rather than a virus.  The first thing I'd suggest is to try simply uninstalling it along with whatever it came with and then rescan.  I also found this:

Maybe try to find it's registry key.. "HiJackthis" is a start anyway.

ive had horrific results with highjack, im just not smart enough for it. i did find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Trymedia Systems" and deleted it. per smooth's post, but my system wouldn't run without it.  i hate registry files!!! but i will keep looken for a solution prior to a format.

 also per smooth's post.

    Deleting Trymedia Files
#
Step 1

Go to Start menu and click on Search.
#
Step 2

Check the All Files and Folders option.
#
Step 3

Type Playfirst and hit Enter. Delete the found file.
#
Step 4

Repeat this process for ValuSoft and MumboJumbo file names.
#
Step 5

Restart your computer.

i dont have a check box for all files and folders, when i type "playfirst" in search. it dosent find anything.   win7 BTW.

"Click Start > Run. Type REGEDIT. Then click OK. Navigate to the subkeys and delete the values:"

I did that with "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Trymedia Systems", and it killed my bootup, had to use a restore point to get my system to boot up. and it came back.

trend micro has a free online scan and it will fix what it finds at no charge. it's called housecall. i used it recently and it fixed what symantec couldn't
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

if that doesn't work i think mcafee has a free online scan and so does symantec

at the bottom of this page is a tool for it, don;t know if it's going to be free or not

Lava-soft Ad-ware  http://www.lavasoft.com/?langref=jp
Safer Networking Spy-bot search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Two very popular tools for removing malware.  these both are used in tech industry settings.  I have used both for years.
Both have free versions.  Donations welcome I am sure.
using both of these (not at the same time) will find and repair most any computer related malware issue.

If possible, try running any malware removal from 'Safe Mode'.  This will help to keep those pesky apps from hiding or running behind another app.  popcorn

Sorry, that's the only solution for some of these stupid infections.  Good luck.

Ever resolve this?

Also, here's a very good guide regarding security for anyone interested:
