when i built this pc i took my dvd-rw from my hp and put it in here. ever since then the dvd player hasnt worked right. it sees a cd but not a dvd. i tried getting new drivers, software, codecs. occasionaly it will see the dvd, but mostly it wont. i've chaged cables. I'm beginning to think that hp did something to it to make it work only with their mother board. its a dvd writer dvd 300I, but the pc recognises it as a dvd 300n. I think its actually made by phillips. it came from a hp pavillion a530n pc.
I guess the next thing i'm going to do is connect a diffferent dvd player to see it that works with this setup. that will tell me if the problem is with the dvd drive itself.
i've searched the internet and i see lots of forums with similar problems but i can't seem to see a solution.
the drive green light comes on when i put in a dvd and eventually goes out, but it seems like it takes a long time, when i click to explore the dvd it comes up blank or it will say put a disk in. some times i get a invalid memory access error, or something of similar wording.
when i get firmware updates from hp they wont install, saying i dont have the correct hardware.
any ideas?

Okay, I'm the DVD queen.  LOL ..I work with hundreds a day.

I do know this, all DVD discs are not created equal.  I get a whole shipment in that wont work with the Panasonics but will with the Sonys.  Dont get the cheapest DVDs  So it may be your disc. Hav you tried a different brand of DVD?

In a seperate issue than just quality is this. You need to make sure you have the actual right KIND of DVD.  YOu will see the DVD-RW and the DVD+RW. YOu writer may do one or the other or both.  You may know this and have tried this.  But if you havent then its someting to consider.

I can understand why you thought that, cause I said rw
i put a dvd player in my cd slot and it works fine,
must be some problem with the dvd writer.
i guess I'll keep the dvd writer for a cd writer and the dvd player to play dvd's. LOL
don't need to burn dvd's i guess

Well if it will see and write CDs it sounds like a software problem to me. Maybe a Codec o something. .
