Hey VooDoo give Stinky that link you use. Seemed to be a good place to test your speed.

never mind.. found it.

I use the Speakeasy test. It's quick, and shows you your speed in real time, plus you can tell if you have a line problem or modem problem by watching the numbers.

I use the speakeasy tests as well.  What I like about them is I can pick an area to check speed with.  If I check using NYC I know I am checking my local area.  Using DC or Atlanta lets me check speed along the East Coast.   I can use Chicago or LA or Seattle to see how my cross country speed is.

You would be amazed at how often my local speed is good, but dies once I start west.  Helps explain why some servers are good and others are laggy.

You do have to remember it is only checking speed, not latency.  Latency is what can give you lag.

I'll second the recomandation on the Motorola's.  I'm using a Surfboard 5100, I think the latest model  is the 5120.  I'm pretty sure most cable companys support it, but that's a good point Felix.  Make sure, what ever you get, does not use a USB connection to your computer.  The USB overhead will slow you down.   Get an ethernet connection right to your NIC card.

A good sight to use for tweaking your cable setup is here: http://www.levinecentral.com/levinecentral/optimize-ool.html

I know it refers to cablevision, but the info is not company specific.

If you are using a router, AVOID the LinkSys WRT54G.   The latest version is v. 5.0 and it is crap!  Bad firmware and lousy speeds.  Earler versions are fine.  If you check DSL reports you can find a list of the serial numbers and what version it is.

I just got an update to 15/2 at no charge, or increase in price.  Guess Cablevision saw Verizon FIOS in the rearview mirror.
