Here's a neat tip I just learned.  In order to access the configuration settings for your router:

1) start internet explorer
2) put this in the adress bar   http://192.168.1.1/
3) press enter

I know this works on LinkSys routers, not sure on others.

Absolutely, that is how you set up the router through the http console.
I would hope all of you that have routers change the default settings of that router.  198.162.*.* is a default setting for ALL routers including Lynksys.  During set up, you really want to change the default settings, seriously.  Lynksys as stated by Smooth is 198.162.1.1, the 3rd octave which is 1 is speciffic to Linksys but the last octave which is also a 1 can and should be changed to another number up to 253.  Remeber what you change it to because that will be the new Local IP.  For instance, mine is 198.162.1.77  This is now what I type as my routers access.of course that is not my real Local IP but you get the idea.
Motorolla, D-Link, Net Gear all have the same basic configuration though the default IP may be slightly different.  Set up a new PW, assign how many connections you want to allow through that modem (Wireless routers), starting local IP (Mine starts at 198.162.1.1 and allows 4 contections of which 3 are used and one is reserved for a friends laptop)
If this is a wireless setup, you might want to set up a WEP network in which encrypts and puts a added amount of security to that router.  Otherwise anyone close enough can sign right in to the net using your router.  I have in fact left mine open and this will happen.  So WEP up!

That is a very good idea.  You can secure any password you are used to using or want to use.  Just ad two more charactors with a symbol like 2e/yourpw .  Where the yourpw is the one you want to use and the 2e/ are your breaker for fast password breakers.  2e/ means nothing in a dictionary.  These password breakers they have are pretty fast going through a dictionary to find a word that may be used for your password.  Adding an extra few charactors makes it that much harder.
